The Virginia Bloodhound Search and Rescue Association has been sending instructors to Switzerland annually since 1997. This has been to assist the National Bloodhound Association of Switzerland with seminars and lectures on the Mantrailing Bloodhound. Prior to the 2000 seminar the handlers were civilians and volunteer Search and Rescue personnel from Switzerland and surrounding countries. Some police would come and observe the training. We would go to different areas and put on lectures for area law enforcement officials. This was due to the fact that the bloodhound was not being utilized by law enforcement in Switzerland for criminal or SAR related cases. Dr. Marlene Zahner, a VBSAR member, a breeder and handler of the Mantrailing Bloodhound living in Switzerland, came to America for a few years. While she was here see joined VBSAR and attended seminars and became a very knowledgeable and competent handler. When she returned to Switzerland, she had an almost impossible time convincing anyone to utilize the tool that she possessed. She was utilized slightly. She is the one that promoted these seminars and lectures. At the 2000 Switzerland seminar there were several police in attendance as handlers of the Mantrailing Bloodhound. And these teams have already made their mark in the Swiss community.
